VyOS connectivity tools mirror Cisco verbatim: ping <ip> and traceroute <ip> from op-mode. vyos-r1 (eth0 = 10.0.0.1/24) and vyos-r2 (eth0 = 10.0.0.2/24) are pre-cabled.
