Config mode — your first configuration changes

A blank router. Set its hostname, give an interface an IP, bring the interface up. Three commands you'll type ten thousand times over a career.

Scenario

Up to now the router was pre-configured. Time to do it yourself. The Cisco IOS config flow: 1. From priv-exec (R1#), type configure terminal (or conf t) to enter global config mode (R1(config)#). 2. Apply changes — they take effect immediately as you type. 3. Type end (or Ctrl-Z) to leave config mode and return to priv-exec. Sub-modes nest: interface Gi0/0 enters interface-config (R1(config-if)#); exit walks back one level. In this lab R1 starts with one shut-down interface, no IP, and the default Router hostname. You'll fix all three.

Topology

1 × router · Cisco IOS-style

What you will do

  1. Rename the device to EDGE-1 so it stops calling itself Router.

  2. Give Gi0/0 the address 10.0.0.1/30.

  3. Bring Gi0/0 administratively up with no shutdown.
