Scenario

This is the canonical troubleshooting workflow: 1. Reproduce — see the failure with your own eyes. 2. Localise — narrow it down with diagnostic shows. 3. Fix — apply the minimum change that addresses the root cause. 4. Verify — re-run the original test. The setup looks identical to the ping-and-trace lab: R1 (Gi0/0 10.0.0.1/30) cabled to R2 (Gi0/0 10.0.0.2/30). But one of the two interfaces is admin-down, so packets can't cross. No spoiler on which side. You'll find out.

Topology

2 × router · Cisco IOS-style

What you will do

  1. From R1, ping R2 at 10.0.0.2. Watch it fail. Notice the canvas: the link renders dashed-and-red when down.

  2. Run show ip interface brief on R1. Look at the Status / Protocol columns for Gi0/0.

  3. Bring Gi0/0 admin-up on R1.

  4. Re-run the original test: ping R2 at 10.0.0.2 from R1.
