Show and tell — read a router's state

Scenario

Configuration is half the job; reading state is the other half. A router can be misconfigured, perfectly configured but cabled wrong, or perfectly configured and cabled right but waiting on a peer. show commands are how you tell which. In this lab, R1 is pre-loaded with a small config: hostname, description, IP address, loopback. Nothing is broken. Just read.

Topology

1 × router · Cisco IOS-style

What you will do

  1. Type show version. Note the platform string, uptime, and config-register.

  2. Type show clock. Confirm the router's time context before you trust timestamps.

  3. Type show logging. Read recent local events before changing anything.

  4. Type show interfaces. Look at admin / oper / line protocol — three pieces of state per port.

  5. Pipe the running-config through | section interface to grab just the interface blocks.
