Junos config mode — set, show candidate, commit

The headline Junos workflow: enter cfg mode with configure, stage a set line into the candidate, render the candidate with show, then commit to apply.

Scenario

Junos's two-phase commit is the operator-facing difference vs Cisco IOS. Changes don't take effect when typed — they accumulate in a *candidate configuration*. commit atomically swaps candidate to running. rollback discards the candidate (or rolls back N previous commits). In this lab jnx1 has a customer port ge-0/0/0 with no description. You'll add one, render the staged candidate, and commit it.

Topology

1 × router · Junos-style

What you will do

  1. Enter cfg mode with configure. Prompt changes from root@jnx1> to [edit]\nroot@jnx1#.

  2. Stage a description on ge-0/0/0: set interfaces ge-0/0/0 description uplink-to-jnx2.

  3. Apply the candidate with commit. The description lands in the running IR.
