Two routers share an HSRP virtual IP. R1 starts active (priority 110); R2 stands by (default priority 100). Configure interface tracking on R1's uplink so that if Gi0/1 (the uplink) goes down, R1's effective priority drops below R2's and standby takes over.

Scenario
HSRP failover by default tracks only the local interface on which the standby group is configured. To trigger failover on *upstream* faults (an uplink to the WAN going down on the active), use interface tracking: `` standby <group> track <track-id> decrement <N> ` A separate track <id> interface <name>` object monitors a different interface; when that interface goes line-protocol-down, the active's effective priority drops by N. If the new effective priority falls below the standby's priority — *and* preempt is configured — failover fires. In this lab R1 has both a LAN (Gi0/0, the HSRP segment) and a WAN uplink (Gi0/1). Track Gi0/1; decrement 20 on the active; force failover by shutting Gi0/1 down.
