Scenario

HSRP (RFC 2281) lets two or more routers share a virtual IP and virtual MAC. Hosts use the virtual IP as their default gateway. When the active router fails, standby takes over. The Cisco vMAC is always 0000.0c07.acXX where XX is the HSRP group id in hex.

Topology

1 × switch, 3 × router · Cisco IOS-style

What you will do

  1. On R1.Gi0/0, configure HSRP group 1 with virtual IP 10.0.0.1, priority 110, and preempt.

  2. On R2.Gi0/0, same group 1 / same vIP 10.0.0.1, with the default priority 100.

  3. From HOST, ping the vIP 10.0.0.1 — the active router answers.
