IPv6 static route — egress-interface form

Two routers on a /64 P2P link. R1 reaches R2's loopback /128 via a static route whose next-hop is the *egress interface*, not an IPv6 address. Mirrors the IPv4 ip route X Y Gi0/0 shape; safe on point-to-point.

Scenario

IPv6 static routes accept two next-hop forms, mirroring IPv4: `` ipv6 route 2001:db8:99::1/128 2001:db8:1::2 ← address form ipv6 route 2001:db8:99::1/128 Gi0/0 ← egress-iface form `` The egress-interface form skips the recursive next-hop lookup — the FIB sends the packet straight out the interface and resolves the destination via Neighbor Discovery on the wire. Safe on point-to-point links and tunnels; unsafe on multi-access Ethernets where every destination triggers a separate ND.

What you will do

  1. On R1, install ipv6 route 2001:db8:99::1/128 Gi0/0 — egress-interface form.

  2. From R1, ping R2's loopback at 2001:db8:99::1.
