Scenario
Trunks transport multiple VLANs over a single link with 802.1Q tags. Without a trunk, a VLAN cannot extend across switches — hosts in the same VLAN but on different switches won't see each other.
Topology
2 × switch, 4 × router · Cisco IOS-style
SW1— switchSW2— switchH1— routerH2— routerH3— routerH4— router
What you will do
Make SW1.Eth9 a trunk port and allow VLANs 10 and 20.
Symmetric on SW2.Eth9 — trunk + allowed VLANs 10,20.
Confirm with
ping: H1 (VLAN 10 on SW1) reaches H3 (VLAN 10 on SW2).
